Enjoying a massage without feeling embarrassed

There’s nothing quite like having a massage in the comfort of your own home. However, if you’re feeling shy or hesitant about the process, don’t be! Massage therapists are professionals who have seen it all. Here are some helpful tips to ensure a great massage experience and avoid any awkward or embarrassing moments.

UNdressing and towel ETIQUETTE

At Massage By Jen, all massages have a strict towel etiquette to ensure that clients feel comfortable and confident about disrobing. Most proper massage therapists have been trained in proper draping to avoid any surprise moments during the session. You will be asked to undress to your comfort level and you will be given ample privacy. Once you are ready, if during the session there is a need to turn over during the massage, we will give you plenty of notice and always use the towel as a barrier to help you move smoothly.

To shave or not to shave

Don’t worry about hairy legs or arm pits. Hair is a normal and natural part of our bodies, so don’t be embarrassed. We are focused on your muscles, trigger points, knots, pain, nerves and tendons. We couldn’t care any less about the smallest of stubble. Just have basic hygiene and be clean. Don’t stress about anything else.

People or pets in your home

If you’re using a mobile massage or out-call massage service which comes to your own home, you may have all manner of people there, too. While we’d recommend you pick a quiet room for your massage, we’re also fine if children and pets are around. Just verify the therapist is okay with pets or if they have any allergies. It doesn’t matter as long as you can relax and enjoy the massage. As long as everyone is happy, we’re happy.

Massage farts

Fart, wind, gas, flatulence, whatever you want to call it, you may be mortified if it happens during a massage. Massage can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate and increases intestinal and gland activity. Those gurgles and the occasional burp are signs that your body is relaxing and doing its thing! It’s just a sign that your body is relaxing and doing its thing! The parasympathetic nervous system may also relax sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, so gas may move a little easier. Again, that’s your body doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Your massage therapist won’t be bothered if you pass gas on the massage table. We’re happy your body is working well, and we want you to unwind and enjoy your massage.

Taking an accidental NAP

If you start snoring during a massage, please don’t worry. It happens pretty often and we take it as a compliment because it means you’re totally relaxed and at ease. If it happens, if needed, we’ll gently wake you up with a gentle touch. Snore away.
